Tastykakes in Space!

...or should I say "Spacetykakes!"

Anyone who is from the East Coast or has visited has probably tried (and enjoyed) the ubiquitous Tastykakes. Tastykakes come in all styles and flavors and can be purchased at just about every grocery store and gas station. Whenever I'm home, I pick up some of my favorites: Lemon and Apple Tastykake Pies (or as I call them, Tastypies).

Apparently I'm not the only one who enjoys these sweet treats. Chris Ferguson, the commander of the final Space Shuttle mission which is currently on-orbit, is a Philadelphia native and brought some along with him on this mission.

He also brought a Chase Utley jersey up on his last mission, which makes my #26 jersey suddenly seem way less cool as it has never been in orbit. I wonder if he ever wrote Chase a letter like Mac did?

Congratulations Fergie, you're my new favorite astronaut!

Fall is Here! ...sort of

Yesterday when I stepped outside for work in the morning, it was colder outside than inside for the first time this year. In Texas this is cause for celebration! Then last night, the Phillies clinched the NL East championship, which is becoming a fall tradition. Today at the store the flowers on display were fall colors, not summers, and I was thrilled to pick some up as well as some miniature squashes for a festive centerpiece. Welcome home, fall!

Weird sidenote: I planned this post as I drove home and Jen and I must have been on the same wavelength because she had the same idea today...check out her decorations!

Now That's a Philadelphia Fan

Courtesy of the700level.com:

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson were at the Phillies-Dodgers game on Tuesday night when Sweet Dee went into labor. The Inq's Michael Klein reports that the couple left the game, and Olson later gave birth to a baby boy, Axel Lee McElhenney, who will probably be the funniest son of a [talented actress] alive. Klein has more on the story here, and Olson's quote gives us some indication of the baby's birthright:

"As soon as Ryan Howard hit a three run home run, we felt comfortable leaving to go have our baby."

SO WAIT. WAIT. YOU LEFT EARLY???

Fair Weather Fans

One of my pet peeves is the fair weather fan. This person ignores a team all season long until they are close to a record, or a championship, then runs out to buy a jersey and tell everyone how his cousin's hairdresser's husband knew that one player in high school and beat him in mini golf.

I'm not the only one who feels this way; Penn State has had lackluster student attendance at football games this year. It's easy to see why (Akron, Temple, Syracuse, and Eastern Illinois all started at noon) but some people think that's no excuse. I was lucky enough to have season tickets for all four of my years at PSU and took advantage of them, even though I had to walk 10 miles in the snow uphill both ways and stand on flaming coals to watch the team have 3 losing seasons in 4 years.*

Which is why I am just that much more embarrassed to admit what I have been doing most nights for the past week: watching the Phillies in the World Series. I can count how many regular season games I watched on one hand and now I'm glued to the tv. But hey, it's my inalienable right as an American to be a hypocrite. So let's go Phils!

*Only one of those qualifiers is true; I'll let you guess which.
